Candy Bar

I got all the emails! Kaitlyns house looks huge! Jayden looks beautiful and I loved the Canadian facts! I would also like to know celebrities from Canada and if you could send me a loonie and a toonie in the mail that would be great. I have a 5 and 10 dollar bill and people are soooo fascinated with our plastic money here haha. 

Thank you for figuring out my driving info. I will send you that stuff in the mail just because the Rantoul library doesn't have a scanner that is connected to a computer.

This week was pretty sweet! We had Zone Leader Training this transfer and the zone leaders gave a training about "12 week" (12 week is the booklet you go through the first 12 weeks of your mission as you are being trained.) Because the whole mission will be studying from it since a lot of new missionaries will be coming in this summer and will need to be trained. It was a very motivating meeting. This week in the 12 week booklet it talked about finding and so the zone leaders challenged the zone. If we found more investigators this week then they do, they have to buy us a candy bar. But if they find more then we do, we have to buy them a candy bar. The zone was willing to accept the challenge. By the end of the week me and my companion picked up 5 new investigators. Did we beat the zone leaders?.... You bet we did :) Rantoul Sisters, Paris Sisters and Champaign Elders were the only ones who beat the zone Leaders. Now they owe us a candy bar.

Our first investigator that we picked up is an 18 year old girl named Gabby who just graduating from High school. She was a media referral and ordered a bible from mormon.org. When ever people order a dvd, book of mormon, bible or what ever, missionaries drop it off. We were able to get into her house and teach her the restoration. She said that she is non-denominational because she hasn't found a church that is right for her yet. So we were like perfect! 

Another new investigator is Dao. He is originally from Vietnam but then moved to America in the 1980's because it was not safe in Vietnam. He lived in California but 6 months ago he moved to Rantoul. His english is not very good but he is a cute little old asian man! I love him!! We knocked on his door and shared a book of mormon with him. We saw him again on sunday and just talked about who God is and a little bit more about the book of mormon. It will be so different teaching Dao because he does not have a christian background. He is the first person on my mission that I have taught who is not christian. But it is exciting and refreshing and I really like it! 

And then we picked up part of a family! A mom named Noeli and her two boys Alex and David who are 17 and 19. They are spanish. The boys are good at speaking english but the mom struggles a little bit. They are catholic. We found the mom from tracting and she said we could come back. We came back and they just pulled up and said that they just got back from a day trip to Chicago. We sat down with them and taught them the restoration. It was the boys who were answering our questions the whole time. But the mom was nodding her head a lot and smiling. I think the lesson went well. We asked the mom if she had any question but she said no and said that she understood everything. We have a return appointment with them so I think they will be good investigators.

Yesterday was memorial day so the library was closed. that is why I am emailing today. And I also have good news! Elder D. Todd Christoferson is coming to our mission to speak to us on june1st! So I will see him three days in a row at stake conference and at another mission conference!!! I am so excited! 

No ipads yet. :(

The mission is like the MTC to the rest of your life. I feel like everything I do as a missionary has helped me build my confidence and is helping me become a better person. It has taught me how to be thrifty and budget , it has taught me how to organize and plan out appointments, it has taught me how to problem solve and trust in God, and it has taught me how to love and to be a representative of Jesus Christ. And much much more. I think a mission is the best think I can do for my life right now.

Mowing the Lawn

Hi Family!

We had interviews with the mission president this week and I just love our mission president! He is so inspired! After interviews we were tracting and we came to this guys house and he didn't really want to talk to us because he was cooking dinner and he said he had a lot of stuff to do like mow his lawn. so we offered to mow his lawn and he was like what?! Really?! Dressed like that!? haha it was funny. He then let us mow his lawn! It was awesome! After we mowed his lawn we were able to share a message with him and give him a book of mormon. He didn't want to take the missionary discussions but we were able to serve him and plant a seed by sharing a message with him. He will always remember mormon missionaries came and mowed his lawn.

We not only get members to help us with investigators but I have seen lots of success in bring members to less active lessons. That is something that we didn't do at all in my last area. But I feel like people have so many different backgrounds and experiences, and sometimes I can't relate to people because of my inexperience in life. I am only 19. but members I feel like can relate to investigators and less active members on a different level. And I feel like God guides us by the spirit on who we need to bring with us at that certain time. 

Also investigators and less active members need friends. Because conversion is such a big change they need a friend to help them so they are not alone in that change. That is why I think visiting teaching and home teaching are so important. We were able to go out with a lady to help her with her visiting teaching and it was very beneficial. The less active member knew the missionaries very well but she didn't know her visiting teacher and we were able to introduce them and build that relationship. We reactivated a young mom with two boys. missionaries have a good relationship with her went over weekly and shared messages with her. One week me and my companion decided to bring the branch president and his wife with us. they were able to build a friendship and the branch president will actually be marrying her and her boyfriend this summer. she has been coming to church 3 weeks in a row now and her boys are loving primary. 

I have lots of less active success stories here! But really it is sad. A lot of reasons why less actives don't come to church is because they were offended. All they really need is a friend. SO my challenge to you is to go out and make a new friend!!

Eating Out Problem

Hello! It was good to see you :) 

I feel like this week was really long but it was still really good. We didn't teach a lot of lessons to investigators but we worked really well with less active members and even a few came to church!! 

A new lady moved into our ward and she is awesome!! Her name is Barb and she loves missionaries. This one day we were eating at MacDonalds and this random guy was sitting behind us. we were talking with Barb and she was telling us her conversion story and it was a really nice lunch. The next day a less active took us out for lunch at taco bell and we got there a little early and guess what!? That same guy was there! He looked at us and was like, "Hey weren't you guys at Macdonalds yesterday? And we were like ya and he was like do you guys have an eating out problem like I do?" He continued to tell us that he couldn't help but over hear our conversation. and we talked about who we are and what we do. we set up a time to meet with him on tuesday so hopefully that goes well! so hopefully that goes well!

Nasty Bruises

Hey Family!! 

This week was a blast!

Quintin L. Cook is so cool! It was a great mission conference last Saturday! He gave great advice on mission work and stayin motivated! I went up to him, looked him in the eyes and shook his hand! He has a really lumpy head in real life! He looks a lot older in real life too! It was really cool. There was no exciting announcements for the mission. Elder Cook just wanted to see us just because. Friday night we drove to springfield IL and stayed over night there and then drove to St. Louis the next day. I MISS St. Louis!!!!! I want to serve in the city again. But I love the branch in Rantoul. The people are so great here :) Also I am staying another transfer in Rantoul with Sister Dunn!! 

Also with Sister Clarks book... I was with a member and we looked online and she can actually buy the book on Amazon. Except the cheapest copy is used and it is $89.99. Copies that are not used are over $100. Champaigne has a family history center and members were telling me that they could probably give me more info on the book. family history center times are really dumb. they are open wednesday and thursday from 7pm till 9pm and friday from 9am-noon. I didn't have a chance to call them last week but I can call them this week and see if they can help me out with this book and see if I can find a cheaper one because you guys only gave me $50. Sorry it is taking so long to get this book but remember I am serving in a bunch of country towns so not a lot of legit book stores are around. I will keep asking members to help out though.

I have heard nothing about iPads for our mission. No iPads for us :( sounds like every mission around me is getting them but us! I still have faith though!

Here is a good story. I was at district meeting last week and I was in a dark hallway and I was going to sit down on some chairs but I didn't realize that there was not chair in between two chairs so I fell and I whacked my arms on the arm rest of the two other chairs and now I have two big nasty bruises on my arms. They are getting worse. Haha it was funny but it was embarrassing. luckily not a lot of people were around.

Ryan also got baptized this saturday!!!!! I love this kid! He is 9 years old and his family was inactive. His mom said that Ryan has been asking to be baptized since he was 7. They were waiting for his dad to baptize him but his dad can't stop smoking. So finally his mom didn't want to wait any more. Our Branch President told us that we needed to call her and set up a time to teach Ryan. so we did and started teaching right away! Ryan was so good and learned everything so fast! The baptism was so good! Ryan's mom was crying and ryan had the biggest smile on his face when he came out of the water! The next sunday was fast sunday and a lot of people testified about ryan's baptism and how awesome it was. Ryan's mom and his sister went up and bore there testimonies too! It was cool to see ryan baptized but I loved so much more to see this bring his family back to church and strengthen there testimonies! A prime example of how the gospel blesses families!!! :)

Storm Season

Heyyy. 

 

This week was really good. We had exchanges and were really blessed with lots of lessons with people. Ryan's baptism is this weekend so we have been busy getting ready for that. he is doing great and just absorbing the info that we give him.

I stayed in Rantoul for exchanges and we found three new investigators! We were walking down the street and found this crazy black guy and his girlfriend. He was so funny and fun to talk to. We had our first lesson with him and we tried to teach the restoration but he talked a lot and had really crazy views of the bible and God. He tried to act like he knew the bible well but he was so off! haha He was messing up the stories and making things up! Anyways. A story for another time. Hopefully we can clear things up for him and get him more open minded.

And then we found a young mother who's first language is Spanish. she was so sweet. we taught her the plan of salvation and the next time we teach her we are going to bring a member with us who speaks Spanish! I am so excited!

We have been working a lot recently with Less active and we had a wonderful surprise on Sunday! A young mother and her two boys who are less active came to church! I was so happy to see them! Hopefully they will come more.

Also! Things that are coming up is this Saturday we will be having a mission conference and Elder Quinton L Cook will talk to the mission and also Elder Ulisses Soares from the Presidency of the quorum of the 70 and Elder Gary E Smithson who is in the presiding Bishopbric! So I am excited to hear from them :)

We are not becoming a I Pad mission though :( Not yet at least....

I unfortunately don't have a lot of time today but I am doing great! This week was good and I feel like I am learning lots this week.

A New Friend

Hello!

This week was pretty good. We were busy and we had lots of tender mercies and funny moments haha.

We had a lesson with and investigator named Betsy. This is and old lady who I mentioned in my last email about the Plan of Salvation lesson. This was the second time that we have seen her. We got talking and I told her that during our church service, members of the church are asked to give talks instead of having a paid preacher. and she says, "Oh like the mormon church." I said with a big smile, "Ya that's us! We are Mormons!" And the look she gave me was priceless haha I just started laughing and was like, "Betsy! We are from the Church of Jesus Christ of latter Day Saints!! That is the Mormon church!" It was so funny. I think she has a bad memory or something. I love her though.

I also taught someone who had no idea what a mormon was! They are still out there!! Hopefully we can teach them more.

Also an investigator we have we used to just teach her and her family little spiritual thoughts from the bible because she didn't want to take the lessons but last Monday we asked her if she would take the lessons and she said yes! We will teach her the restoration tonight and we want to invite her to baptism and I hope she says yes soooooo baaaaaaad!!! so that was a little miracle.

And then we were in Fisher trying to contact some people labeled as "less active" and we would tract around there houses. It was 8pm, that last awkward hour of the day but some people also like to call it the miracle hour. Anyways we knock on this one house and this lady answers the door she probably in her 30s and she has kind of a serious look on her face and said, "yes?" We did our little sch-peel and said that we shared messages centered on Jesus Christ. I asked her is she was very religious herself, and she said another solid, "Yes." And I was like, "Okay cool can we share our card with you?" Not thinking that she was that interested to hear about what we had to say. and she was like, "Ya hold on one second" She goes upstairs and get her three girls and brings them

down and invites us in to share our message with them. I was thinking whaaat!! okay Sweet!! They were actually a really cool family! And her girls love God! It was crazy. 

Another day we were contacting more less actives because there are soooo many in this Branch. And the lady answers the door and she seems pretty nice we are talking to her a little bit and we try to set up another time to see her and she is like, "I don't plan on coming back so I will just be a waste of your time." And I said, "Well we could just come and be your friend!" And she said, "Well we can all use a friend. You can come back next Saturday." And in my mind I was like whoa I did not think that would work haha! So ya we made a new friend the other day! haha 

Anyways, those were the highlights. I am reminded every day of how much I love being a missionary! And how beautiful the "music" the gospel gives! And I am an instrument in God's hands, sharing the music with anyone who is willing to hear. 

I hope you all have a friend! Or at least a friend in Jesus! Get yo praise on!
